Winter's Hotting Up For Slide

A whole month of snow on the ground in parts of the UK created a bumper festive period for snow-related products. With more cold weather to come, things are hotting up for Slide.

An additional 8 companies have signed up for Slide since mid December and more are expected in the last week before the show opens.

Recent additions include accessory specialists such as Man O’Leisure, Dix gloves, Mycoal-Skicare and Ryders Eyewear, while newcomers Evoc Sports bring a range of new packs and luggage.  Hytrade will be showing Bond Outerwear, inspiring and unique outerwear from a carbon neutral company, as well as Weekend snowboards while Banana Moon plan to bring a little glamour to Slide.

The Slide Awards showcase the hottest products at Slide and the 2010 version is shaping up to be extremely competitive, with some truly innovative products and features emerging. Columbia’s Omni-Heat family of thermal reflective technologies for clothing and footwear is already attracting attention but Head too, have pushed the envelope. Taking the lead from Formula 1, they’ve introduced KERS technology to both skis and snowboards; an electronic, fully automatic and integrated system that provides additional power and acceleration, catapulting the rider into the next turn. Tecnica’s latest boot, the Phoenix 100 Airshell  puts the focus firmly on fit and comfort, with the introduction of personal customisation using a control panel on the rear of the boot to provide support and comfort just where it’s needed.

Entries are flooding in for the Slide Awards in the 3 categories of hardware, software and accessories. The finalists will be on display throughout the show in a special display area and will be judged on the first day of the show by retailers, media and industry opinion-leaders.

'Head' for Slide

The Head design team must have been working flat out to come up with some genuinely exciting new skis and helmets that will be on show at Slide…

Turbo-charged skiing!

Best-known for its use in Formula 1, KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is heading for the slopes as Head incorporate it as a performance-enhancer into their skis next season.

So how does it work? Piezoelectric fibres positioned behind the binding transform mechanical impulses into electrical energy, which is stored in a microchip. The chip releases this stored energy to the ski right when it’s needed, controlled by a special sensor which is pre-programmed according to the particular flex patterns of the ski model.

Influenced by the length of the ski, weight of the skier and speed of travel, a ski is in maximum flex towards the end of the turn. In the area where the ski flexes the most, the microchip sensor is activated, releasing the energy to the piezoelectric fibres. This in turn stiffens the tail, leading to a rebound that gives maximum acceleration at the end of the turn, accelerating the racer from one turn to the next.

Simples!

New and Returning Brands Commit to Slide

Christmas may be the first thing on people’s minds right now, but hot on the heels of Christmas will be Slide, taking place from 27-29 January at Manchester Central. While the early date may have appeared like a curved ball to some, it made the decision to exhibit an easy one for other companies.

As regards clothing, Patagonia and Peak Performance will be showing at Slide for the first time in a number of years.  Oxbow are also returning to Slide, with their new distributors, Ultra Sport who are excited at the prospect of working with Oxbow.  Gordon Way said, “The new Autumn Winter collection for 2011 is getting a great reaction from those that have seen it. Those retailers who are looking for something exclusive and different with the potential for decent profits should be sure to drop by on stand F14.”

For kids clothing, new British brand Kozikidz will be showing for the first time. Kozikidz, for the under 8’s feature the sort of practical details that can make a real difference, including reflectors, thumbholes and detachable hoods, so that pint-sized snowlovers can concentrate on having fun in their trendy all-weather gear.

As far as underwear goes, Bawbags have got it covered with their range of boxers that promise to ‘keep ‘em tidy’. Such has been their success, they’re even branching out into baselayers.

Slide - January Dates Cause A Stir

The UK’s biggest wintersport trade show, Slide, has brought its dates before major European show ISPO for the first time. Opinions on how this will affect the industry are divided, with strong feeling on both sides.

The new dates (27-29 January), no longer at a weekend and more than two weeks earlier than the show's slot last season, mean that for many retailers the first chance to see complete ranges from leading brands will be in Manchester, rather than Munich. Slide will now be the launch point for new ranges, creating the excitement and buzz of innovation for retailers.

Snowsport Industries of Great Britain, Slide's owners, revealed that they had to react to the ISPO date going back. “Slide is a major part of the winter retail buying experience so it’s imperative that the show dates are relevant to the buying calendar", said Damon Street, President of SIGB. "Most suppliers present to retailers in store, at showrooms, at Slide, at ISPO, at the Ski Test in Bormio and at the Snowboard Test in Kaunertal.  When ISPO announced the show would be running a week later due to the major American show SIA’s date change, we could either take Slide to the end of February or run it prior to ISPO".

Slide Enjoys Avalanche of Exhibitors

Within the first week of stand space going on sale at Slide 2010, 40% of the available space has been snapped up, with a further 10% pending confirmations.

Organiser Lesley Beck said, “I don’t think the show could have been better received. The new, earlier January dates have not deterred previous exhibitors from re-booking at the very first opportunity, and the level of interest from potential new brands is also very encouraging”.

Part of the reason for exhibitor optimism can be put down to the earlier dates of Slide 2010. Traditionally Slide has taken place a fortnight after ispo, the international show, but the SIGB (Snowsport Industries of Great Britain) took the decision to bring Slide forward in advance of ispo next year.

Slide is encouraging exhibitors to show at Slide without having to build expensive stands. Many have taken up the space only option that facilitates the ‘rock and rail’ approach; exhibitors simply rock up at the show and wheel their free-standing rails onto their space for a straightforward and cost-effective approach to exhibiting. Another attractive feature of the show is the price - starting at £69 per square metre, it’s been 10 years since prices were lower than this.

Slide 2010 Announces New Dates

Slide 2010 has announced a radical change to its dates for 2010, moving from mid February to late January (27th-29th). bringing the show in advance of ispo, the European tradeshow (7th-10th Feb).

Damon Street, president of SIGB explained, "SIGB has been monitoring the timing of Slide relative to order deadlines and other relevant events, both in the UK and worldwide. Due to the changing nature of the way business is conducted these days, the time is now right to bring Slide into January, when we believe it will be of most value to the majority of our members and to the industry as a whole."
